The phone is ringing, your email notifications are pinging, and in spite of top-notch Word skills, you just can’t get the report you’re working on to format correctly. Some people might think they were trapped in a bad dream. But to you, it’s just an especially stressful day as an admin.
The life of an administrative professional is hectic. You’re expected to don many caps throughout the day, from helping colleagues with Outlook tips to completing your own list of daily duties. Sometimes, with all the ringing, pinging and questions, workplace stress can become overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be. Take a deep breath and get ready to learn how to relieve stress. Here are five stress management strategies for the workplace:
1. Make a list
This may sound like an obvious tip, but when you have a physical representation of everything you need to tackle, your day won’t seem as taxing. Additionally, having a list of priorities to tick off as you work makes you feel like you’re accomplishing something. Well, you are. Think of each completed item as a goal you’ve met.
2. Ask for help
Have you made your list but are still having trouble keeping your head above water? It’s possible you have your plate stacked too full, and when you’re rushing and stressing, being overloaded can lead to errors. There’s no shame in asking for help. Talk to your manager about how to relieve stress for those times you may need someone to assist with some of your duties.
3. Take your breaks
Breaks are there for a reason. They exist as a means of stress management and to keep you from burning out. Make it a point to get out of the office for lunch whenever you can. Even if you brownbag it, take a walk around the building just to get outdoors. If you can’t get outdoors, look for ways to relax, like reading a magazine or working on a crossword puzzle — anything that allows you to shut off your work brain for a few minutes.
4. Try some office exercise
Sitting all day can be tedious. Do a few knee bends or take a stroll around the halls or stairways for a few minutes. You’ll get your blood circulating and work out some of the workplace stress that’s built up over the day. Feeling daring? Dance in your seat while no one is looking. If you get caught, laugh with coworkers and encourage them to join in so they can relieve some stress, too.
5. Leave work at work
Everyone takes some time to vent about the day to friends or partners. But limit it to 15 minutes. That way you don’t run the risk of damaging relationships or worrying about your job so much that you start to resent it.
A busy admin doesn’t have to be a frazzled admin. When you know how to relieve stress in the workplace, you’ll find that the quality of your workday improves along with the quality of your work.
