Robert Half Management Resources is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to support our higher education client for a 3+ month hybrid engagement (three days on-site per week) in the Westlake Village area. This role oversees accounting operations, financial reporting, and the control environment, ensuring financial integrity, compliance with GAAP and university policies, and support for key strategic initiatives. The Interim Controller collaborates with cross-functional teams, manages day-to-day accounting activities, and delivers timely, accurate financial statements. The ideal candidate brings proven leadership experience in higher education, strong technical expertise, and a hands-on approach to process improvement. Responsibilities:• Manage all aspects of accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.• Ensure timely and accurate completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.• Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to ensure compliance with university policies and regulatory standards.• Prepare financial statements, variance analyses, and budget reports for presentation to senior leadership.• Lead and mentor accounting staff, fostering growth and operational efficiency.• Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions to enhance financial operations.• Collaborate with teams across departments to support budgeting, forecasting, and grant reporting initiatives.• Provide insights and recommendations to align financial practices with organizational goals.• Support system enhancements and ensure seamless integration with financial processes.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. • At least 7 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within higher education or the non-profit sector. • Strong knowledge of internal controls, compliance regulations, and financial systems. • Proven experience in managing and mentoring finance teams. • Familiarity with monthly close processes and financial reporting. • Experience with payroll systems such as ADP is highly desirable. • Ability to identify and implement process improvements. • Previous consulting or interim experience is a plus.
