Media Relations Coordinator
<p>We are looking for an experienced Media Relations Coordinator to join our nonprofit client. This contract position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and execution of effective communication strategies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in media relations, corporate communications, and crafting impactful messaging for diverse audiences.</p><p><br></p><p>Responsibilities:</p><ul><li>Coordinate media relations activities, from helping prioritize media opportunities to gathering information for journalists to vetting new media inquiries. </li><li>Track media coverage daily and compile coverage report on a weekly or biweekly basis. </li><li>Assemble reports summarizing results for various topics, issues, and projects or clients, as well as challenges and opportunities. </li><li>Monitor news around issue areas of focus; capturing and reporting out themes; identifying opportunities and recommendations on how best to take advantage of them. Research specific reporters to understand their beats/style. </li><li>Build and maintain media lists focused on different issue areas, media, and markets. </li><li>Assist with media event production, such as press conferences or briefings. </li><li>Provide support to the department leaders, such as taking notes during check-ins and other internal meetings; drafting agendas, notes, and next steps; and updating action plans. </li></ul>
<p><strong>Experience</strong></p><ul><li>2-4 years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a government, electoral campaign, or policy environment, and at least 2 years coordinating media relations activities. </li><li>Experience in communications and an understanding of how the media industry operates, particularly in service of social justice.</li><li>Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. </li><li>Passion and commitment to using the power of government to protect marginalized communities’ civil rights and freedoms. </li><li>Commitment to the mission and core values of Public Rights Project, especially diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.</li></ul><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><ul><li>Ability to translate technical information into accessible content for audiences with various backgrounds, interests, and levels of understanding, focusing on the impact of the work in real-world terms. </li><li>Strong writing, editing, copy editing, and proofing skills, with strategic attention to messaging, voice, and accuracy. </li><li>Flexibility required to handle unexpected deadlines and emergency communications needs. </li><li>Strong planning skills, highly responsive, and strong attention to detail. </li><li>Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines. </li><li>Effective time management skills, with the ability to maintain productivity, adapt to shifting priorities, and move through ambiguity. </li><li>A problem solver who isn’t afraid to ask questions, or for help, but is ready with possible answers or a path through. </li><li>Self-starter with the ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment while being highly responsive with team members to ensure cohesive communications and branding efforts. </li><li>Experience working in a collaborative, remote team environment with regular virtual meetings and frequent project updates.</li></ul>
