Housing Specialist
We are looking for a detail-oriented Housing Specialist to join our team in Berkeley, California. In this Contract position, you will play a key role in assisting individuals and families with public housing programs, ensuring compliance with regulations and delivering exceptional service. This role involves assessing eligibility, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with landlords and tenants to support housing stability.<br><br>Responsibilities:<br>• Conduct interviews with applicants to gather required information for public housing assistance and guide them through the application process.<br>• Verify applicant circumstances by coordinating with previous landlords, social service agencies, and other relevant organizations.<br>• Evaluate eligibility based on established criteria and make determinations regarding housing program qualifications.<br>• Maintain comprehensive client records and oversee annual participant activities, including reexaminations, terminations, and portability processes.<br>• Calculate housing allowances, determine rent levels, and manage modifications or terminations of assistance programs.<br>• Issue housing vouchers and lead informational briefings for unit transfers or moves.<br>• Ensure accurate data entry for monitoring program activities, generating reports, and preparing essential documents such as leases and contracts.<br>• Facilitate meetings and mediate conflicts between applicants, participants, landlords, and staff while adhering to housing regulations.<br>• Provide courteous and confidential customer service by addressing inquiries regarding housing authority services through various channels.<br>• Prepare and manage required forms and documents for Federal, State, and County compliance, responding to correspondence related to housing programs.
• Proven experience with budget processes and audit compliance, particularly in housing or rental property management.<br>• Familiarity with Section 8 housing programs and tenant eligibility requirements.<br>• Strong knowledge of effective interviewing techniques for collecting financial and personal data.<br>• Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.<br>• Ability to analyze data and manage recertification practices efficiently.<br>• Understanding of standard office practices and procedures.<br>• Excellent communication skills to interpret program regulations and relay information to diverse audiences.<br>• Capability to operate modern office equipment and software to perform essential duties effectively.
