An Automation Engineer designs, develops and maintains automated solutions that improve technology operations, infrastructure reliability and system efficiency. They build automation frameworks, develop automation scripts, manage infrastructure-as-code processes, support virtualization and Linux environments, and streamline technical processes to reduce manual effort and improve consistency.Working closely with infrastructure, cloud, software development, cybersecurity and operations teams, Automation Engineers implement secure, scalable automation solutions that meet organizational security, compliance and governance requirements while enhancing reliability, scalability and operational resilience.

Typical automation engineer duties:

Design, develop and maintain automation frameworks and solutions that improve infrastructure management, operational efficiency and system reliability.Develop automation scripts and tools using programming languages such as Python to streamline workflows, optimize system performance and reduce repetitive manual processes.Implement infrastructure-as-code and configuration management solutions using tools such as Terraform, Ansible and related automation platforms.Support Linux-based environments by managing, troubleshooting and optimizing systems to maintain availability, security and performance.Manage and support virtualization environments, including VMware platforms, to improve infrastructure scalability and resource utilization.Automate system provisioning, configuration updates, deployments and operational workflows while ensuring consistency across technology environments.Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, software development, cybersecurity and operations teams to identify automation opportunities and improve technical processes.Implement automation practices that support cybersecurity, compliance and governance requirements, including access controls, audit readiness, documentation standards and controlled change management processes.Monitor automated systems, investigate issues and implement improvements to strengthen reliability, performance and operational resilience.Maintain documentation related to automation processes, system configurations and operational procedures to support knowledge sharing and compliance requirements.Evaluate emerging automation technologies and infrastructure solutions to support continuous improvement and modernization initiatives.
