Construction Controller - Potential Future CFO
<p>We are looking for a Controller to lead the financial operations of our construction business in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This role will guide accounting activities, strengthen financial reporting, and provide practical insight that supports operational and executive decision-making. The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting expertise, a command of job costing principles, and the ability to improve processes, reporting, and financial visibility across the organization.</p><p><br></p><p>Responsibilities:</p><p>• Direct day-to-day accounting operations across payables, receivables, payroll, the general ledger, and project-related cost accounting activities.</p><p>• Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close cycle to deliver accurate financial statements and timely reporting for leadership.</p><p>• Establish and monitor internal financial controls to support regulatory compliance, tax requirements, and adherence to company standards.</p><p>• Provide financial guidance to executive and operations leaders by translating accounting data into actionable business insight.</p><p>• Oversee work-in-progress reporting using percentage-of-completion accounting and maintain accurate project revenue recognition.</p><p>• Review project financial performance through cost tracking, forecasting, margin analysis, and early identification of budget variances.</p><p>• Administer financial elements of construction contracts, including retainage, change orders, and overbillings or underbillings.</p><p>• Serve as the primary business lead for the ERP, driving reporting improvements, process efficiencies, data accuracy, and coordination with external partners on upgrades or enhancements.</p><p>• Supervise cash management activities by aligning vendor payments, collections, and working capital priorities with broader business needs.</p><p>• Support organizational risk and compliance efforts through reporting tied to bonding, insurance, licensing, bid qualifications, and multi-state registration requirements.</p>
<p>• Demonstrated experience in construction accounting with strong knowledge of job costing and project-based financial management.</p><p>• Proven ability to lead month-end and year-end close processes while maintaining accuracy and meeting reporting deadlines.</p><p>• Solid understanding of work-in-progress accounting and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.</p><p>• Experience analyzing project margins, forecasting costs, and identifying potential financial risks on active jobs.</p><p>• Familiarity with ERP systems including financial reporting and process improvement responsibilities.</p><p>• Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.</p><p>• Ability to support budgeting activities and provide clear financial insight to both finance and operations stakeholders.</p><p>• Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with a detail-oriented approach to compliance and reporting.</p>
