2026 has been a challenging year for HR teams. In addition to workforce changes and pressures to leverage AI, skills shortages are making it difficult to complete priority projects. HR professionals play a crucial role in the organizations they’re a part of—when teams are strained by missing talent, engagement and hiring slows and performance becomes tougher to manage. In the areas of talent acquisition, workforce planning and leadership development, these skills gaps are disrupting execution and stalling priority projects.  Top initiatives affected: Hiring and retaining skilled talent  Planning for future workforce needs and skills development  Leadership development and succession planning  Improving performance management and productivity  Skills-based hiring and development frameworks With evolving operational demands, these discrepancies across teams are shaping HR job market trends in Canada and influencing how HR leaders are hiring, looking towards more flexible staffing strategies that use a mix of permanent and contract talent.  In fact, 50 per cent of HR leaders plan to increase contract or temporary hiring in the second half of 2026, while 64 per cent plan to expand permanent headcount. As more HR teams embrace the era of AI in the workplace, employers are seeking not only technical skills but also strong soft skills when hiring for their teams. 63 per cent of HR leaders surveyed in the Demand for Skilled Talent Report say critical thinking and problem solving is the top soft skill to complement AI, with 61 per cent citing creativity and innovation as the top skill. Other soft skills leaders noted to complement AI include: Adaptability and continuous learning (58 per cent) Communication (34 per cent) Emotional intelligence (26 per cent)
