Controller
We are looking for an experienced Controller to support a nonprofit finance function during a critical period of stabilization and improvement in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This is a Long-term Contract position focused on strengthening accounting operations, improving financial accuracy, and providing leadership across core close and reconciliation activities. The ideal candidate will bring deep nonprofit accounting expertise, strong technical accounting skills, and the ability to guide staff while building reliable month-end processes.<br><br>Responsibilities:<br>• Lead core accounting oversight for the finance team, ensuring records are accurate, organized, and aligned with nonprofit reporting standards.<br>• Direct balance sheet reconciliations beginning with activity from January 1 and resolve outstanding discrepancies in a timely manner.<br>• Establish, refine, and document a dependable close process that supports consistency, accountability, and timely financial reporting.<br>• Provide hands-on support for cleanup of historical accounting issues, including unreconciled restricted net asset activity and other legacy balance concerns.<br>• Serve as the primary finance representative for accounting-related system implementation work and help align processes with operational needs.<br>• Coach and train finance staff on updated procedures, reconciliation practices, and close responsibilities to strengthen day-to-day execution.<br>• Partner with leadership to create a stronger financial foundation before a permanent controller is brought into the organization.<br>• Review grant, fund, and federal funding activity to help ensure proper classification, tracking, and compliance within the accounting records.
• Demonstrated experience working as a Controller or senior-level accounting leader in a nonprofit environment.<br>• Strong background in fund accounting, grant accounting, and accounting for federal funds.<br>• Proven expertise in account reconciliation and resolving complex balance sheet issues.<br>• Hands-on proficiency with Abila MIP and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.<br>• Ability to document accounting workflows and implement structured month-end close procedures.<br>• Experience training or mentoring accounting staff and improving team execution.<br>• Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including restricted net assets and related reporting considerations.
