A grant accountant is responsible for managing the financial activities associated with grant-funded programs and awards. These professionals help ensure grant funds are tracked, recorded and reported accurately while supporting compliance with funding agreements, organizational policies and applicable regulations. As organizations face increasing accountability for the management of grant funding, grant accountants play a critical role in supporting financial stewardship, transparency and effective program administration.Grant accountants work closely with grant managers, program leaders, finance teams and funding agencies to monitor grant budgets, track expenditures and prepare financial reports. Their work helps organizations maintain compliance with grant requirements, support audits and provide timely financial information related to grant-funded activities.

Typical grant accountant duties:

Monitor grant budgets, expenditures and funding allocations and record and reconcile financial transactions related to grant-funded programsTrack, reconcile and report grant revenue, reimbursements and expenses throughout the grant life cycle to help ensure compliance with grant requirements and organizational policiesPrepare grant-related financial reports, account reconciliations, budget analyses and supporting documentation for internal stakeholders and funding agenciesCollaborate with program managers and finance teams to support grant budgeting, financial planning and compliance activitiesAssist with audits and financial reviews and identify opportunities to improve grant accounting processes, reporting accuracy and financial oversight
