A senior grant accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial management and reporting of grant-funded programs and awards. These professionals help ensure that grant funds are accounted for accurately, expenditures align with funding requirements and financial reporting obligations are met throughout the grant life cycle. As organizations face increasing oversight from funding agencies and greater demands for financial transparency, senior grant accountants play an important role in supporting compliance, accountability and effective stewardship of grant resources.Senior grant accountants work closely with grant managers, program leaders, finance teams and external funding organizations to monitor grant activity, manage complex financial transactions and support strategic decision making. Their work helps organizations maintain accurate financial records, meet reporting deadlines and ensure grant-funded initiatives remain financially compliant and operationally effective.

Typical senior grant accountant duties:

Oversee grant accounting activities and monitor grant budgets, expenditures and funding allocations across multiple grants and funding sourcesReview and reconcile grant-related financial transactions and help ensure compliance with award terms, restrictions and reporting requirementsPrepare financial reports, budget analyses and supporting documentation for funding agencies, organizational leadership and other stakeholdersCollaborate with program managers and finance teams on grant budgeting, forecasting, financial planning and period-end close activitiesSupport audits, monitoring reviews and compliance initiatives while identifying opportunities to improve grant accounting processes, financial reporting and oversight practices
