Controller
We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead financial operations for a growing organization in Sarnia, Ontario. This role is responsible for delivering accurate reporting, supporting business planning, and providing oversight across payroll, compliance, and project-related financial analysis. The successful candidate will guide a small accounting team, collaborate with leadership on financial performance, and help strengthen controls and processes across the function.<br><br>Responsibilities:<br>• Lead the monthly close process and prepare complete financial statements, including profit and loss reporting, for submission to the parent organization within established timelines.<br>• Produce monthly trial balances and maintain accurate financial data for external reporting and consolidation purposes.<br>• Analyze project financial performance at month-end and deliver regular updates on job results, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement across a portfolio of active projects.<br>• Develop the annual budget and provide variance analysis with clear commentary to support operational and strategic decision-making.<br>• Oversee weekly payroll funding activities for both unionized and non-union employees, ensuring accurate and timely bank uploads.<br>• Act as the primary finance contact for year-end activities by coordinating audit support, preparing required documentation, and liaising with external auditors and tax advisors.<br>• Support administration related to employee benefits, union remittances, labour rate development, and compliance with collective agreement obligations.<br>• Provide oversight for government remittances and ensure reporting obligations are completed accurately and on time.<br>• Contribute to finance improvement initiatives, special audit projects, and treasury-related activities as business needs evolve.
<p>• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, including hands-on responsibility for full-cycle financial reporting.</p><p>• Strong knowledge of budgeting, variance analysis, and monthly financial statement preparation.</p><p>• Experience with both union and non-union employees.</p><p>• Familiarity with project accounting, including percentage-of-completion (POC/ % complete) reporting and financial analysis across multiple active jobs.</p><p>• Ability to lead or support audit preparation and coordinate documentation for external auditors and advisors.</p><p>• Solid understanding of government remittances, compliance requirements, and general accounting controls.</p><p>• Proven ability to supervise accounting staff and manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.</p>
