Controller
<p>Our client, a <strong>well-established and respected construction company</strong>, is seeking an experienced <strong>Accounting Manager / Controller</strong> to oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization.</p><p>This is a hands-on leadership position suited to an accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of the full accounting cycle while overseeing a small accounting/administrative team. The role will have responsibility for cash flow, financial reporting, payroll, AP/AR, government remittances, reconciliations, and accounting related to the company&#39;s property and tenant portfolio.</p><p>Key Responsibilities</p><p><strong>Financial Reporting &amp; Accounting</strong></p><ul><li>Prepare monthly and interim financial statements and management reporting.</li><li>Lead the month-end close process, including monthly journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.</li><li>Perform and review bank and general ledger account reconciliations.</li><li>Prepare regular bank status and cash position reports.</li><li>Manage cash flow and monitor short-term funding requirements.</li><li>Prepare and coordinate federal and provincial corporate tax installments.</li><li>Ensure accurate and timely <strong>HST/GST reporting and remittances</strong>.</li></ul><p><strong>Accounts Receivable &amp; Accounts Payable</strong></p><ul><li>Manage accounts receivable, collections, and cash application.</li><li>Oversee the accounts payable function and ensure invoices and payments are processed accurately and on time.</li><li>Coordinate rush and priority cheque requirements.</li><li>Monitor outstanding receivables and payables and proactively address issues.</li></ul><p><strong>Payroll &amp; Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Manage management/office payroll and oversee payroll administration for field employees.</li><li>Ensure payroll information is accurate and processed within established deadlines.</li><li>Coordinate employee benefit remittances.</li><li>Manage <strong>WSIB claims, reporting, and clearance certificates</strong>.</li></ul><p><strong>Property &amp; Tenant Accounting</strong></p><ul><li>Prepare monthly tenant billings.</li><li>Track lease payments and <strong>TMI (taxes, maintenance, and insurance) recoveries</strong>.</li><li>Monitor tenant accounts, outstanding balances, and related reconciliations.</li><li>Maintain accurate accounting records relating to the company&#39;s properties and tenants.</li></ul><p><strong>Team &amp; Office Oversight</strong></p><ul><li>Supervise the day-to-day activities of the accounting function.</li><li>Review work completed by accounting staff and ensure appropriate internal controls are maintained.</li><li>Establish priorities and ensure monthly accounting deadlines are consistently met.</li><li>Work closely with ownership/senior management and provide timely financial information to support business decisions.</li></ul><p><br></p>
<p>Qualifications</p><ul><li>5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within <strong>construction, property management, real estate, development, or a related industry</strong>.</li><li>Strong hands-on experience with the full accounting cycle.</li><li>Demonstrated experience with <strong>cash flow management, month-end reporting, AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, and government remittances</strong>.</li><li>Previous experience supervising or overseeing accounting staff.</li><li>Knowledge of HST/GST, WSIB, payroll and corporate tax installment requirements.</li><li>Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting/ERP systems.</li><li>CPA designation or accounting degree/diploma is an asset, but equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.</li><li>Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.</li><li>A practical, hands-on approach with strong communication and problem-solving skills.</li></ul><p><br></p>
