Legal Secretary Job Description

Legal secretaries provide critical administrative and legal support to attorneys, paralegals and legal teams. This role requires strong organizational, communication and multitasking skills and a thorough understanding of legal terminology, procedures and documentation standards.These professionals manage attorney calendars, coordinate court filings, prepare legal documents and maintain case files. They often serve as the first point of contact for clients and external parties, ensuring professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions. In more senior roles, legal secretaries may also supervise legal support staff and contribute to workflow management and case coordination.

Typical legal secretary duties:

Drafting, formatting and proofreading legal documents, correspondence and court filingsManaging attorney schedules, including appointments, hearings, mediations and closingsCoordinating travel arrangements and maintaining master calendars for case deadlinesPerforming e-filing and managing submissions across local, state and federal courtsMaintaining organized physical and electronic case files and legal databasesCommunicating with clients, witnesses, court personnel and external counselAssisting with trial preparation, including assembling binders and coordinating logisticsSupporting billing, timekeeping and expense reporting processesSupervising legal support staff and ensuring consistent administrative workflowsMonitoring deadlines and ensuring timely filing of legal documents
