Staff Accountant Job Description

Staff accountants are essential members of the finance team who are responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and supporting day-to-day accounting operations. They assist with general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting and month-end close processes. This role requires strong attention to detail, analytical thinking and a solid understanding of accounting principles.

Typical staff accountant duties:

Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring accurate financial reportingReconcile bank statements and general ledger accounts on a regular basisAssist with month- and year-end close processes, including accruals and adjustmentsMaintain and update financial records in compliance with company policies and accounting standardsSupport the preparation of internal and external financial reportsCollaborate with other departments to gather financial data and resolve discrepanciesAssist with audits by providing documentation and responding to inquiriesMonitor and analyze accounting data to identify trends, variances or areas for improvement
