Patent Agent Job Description

Patent agents help clients secure patents for scientific inventions from the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). While patent agents don’t have to be attorneys, they must pass the patent bar examination given by the USPTO. They are also generally expected to have a bachelor’s degree in the area in which they specialize.

Typical patent agent duties:

Study of client inventions and their potential for being patented

Research, preparation and filing of documents with the USPTO

Negotiation and drafting of patent agreements

Handling of communications between the USPTO and client
