Compliance Manager Job Description

In Canada, a Compliance Manager plays a critical role in ensuring a financial institution adheres to all relevant regulations and internal policies. The role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization's compliance framework, mitigating risks, and fostering a culture of compliance within the institution. This position demands strong analytical and interpretative skills, exceptional communication abilities, and a proven track record in risk mitigation within a regulated environment. Typically, 5-8 years of progressive experience in compliance, risk management, or a related field within the financial services sector, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or senior capacity, is required. A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Law, Business, or a related field is essential, with relevant compliance certifications (e.g., CSC, CAMS, or specific regulatory designations) highly preferred. A deep and current understanding of Canadian financial services regulations (e.g., OSFI, IIROC, MFDA, provincial securities commissions) is paramount.

Typical compliance manager duties:

Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies and procedures.Monitor regulatory developments and assess their impact on the organization's operations.Conduct risk assessments to identify and mitigate compliance vulnerabilities.Oversee and manage compliance training and awareness programs for staff.Lead internal compliance reviews and investigations.Prepare and submit regulatory reports to relevant Canadian financial authorities.Advise business units on compliance requirements for new products or initiatives.Liaise with regulatory bodies, internal audit, and external auditors on compliance matters.
