A Compliance Director is a senior executive responsible for leading and overseeing an organization’s regulatory compliance strategy and execution. This role is pivotal in ensuring the company operates ethically and in full adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. The Compliance Director designs, implements, and manages compliance programs, conducts risk assessments, and provides expert guidance to both the executive team and employees. They possess a deep understanding of regulatory requirements, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to foster a strong culture of integrity. Candidates typically have 10-15 years of experience in compliance, legal, audit, or risk management, with a significant portion in a leadership capacity. A Bachelor's degree in Law, Business, or a related field is required, often with a professional designation such as a Certified Compliance Professional (CCP). A comprehensive and current understanding of the Canadian regulatory environment, including federal and provincial laws, industry-specific standards, and privacy legislation, is a critical requirement.

Typical compliance director duties:

Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive compliance program, including policies, procedures, and training.Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk.Oversee and manage the organization’s response to regulatory inquiries and audits.Provide strategic advice to the executive team on current and emerging regulatory issues, with a focus on their impact within Canada.Lead and mentor a compliance team, fostering a culture of ethical conduct and diligence.Monitor changes in Canadian laws and regulations and update internal policies accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.Investigate and report on compliance issues and concerns, ensuring timely resolution and corrective action.Manage and communicate with external regulatory bodies and legal counsel.
