Firms look for detail-oriented candidates with excellent verbal, writing and interpersonal skills who can communicate complex information to a variety of audiences. A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field and a minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience are required.

Typical SEC financial reporting director duties:

Managing the internal and external financial reporting on a monthly, quarterly and annual basisOverseeing the preparation of quarterly and annual reports on public filings (10-Q, 10-K and other SEC filings) and internal and external review for these documentsAssisting in implementing controls to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-OxleyPerforming technical accounting research and documentation on specific accounting issuesAssisting in analysis of the monthly financials: identifying variances, researching issues and communicating resultsMonitoring and ensuring timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidanceCommunicating and explaining accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance to the management teamAssisting with merger and acquisition due diligence, integration and newly acquired entities into the financial reporting processManaging staff and workloads
