Payroll Clerk Job Description

A payroll clerk ensures employees are paid accurately and on time. To succeed in this role, individuals must have strong attention to detail, a solid understanding of payroll systems and a commitment to confidentiality. A high school diploma is generally required, and some employers may prefer candidates with an associate degree or some college coursework in accounting or a related field. Experience with payroll software and basic accounting principles is a plus.

Typical payroll clerk duties:

Collecting and verifying timekeeping data for all employeesCalculating and issuing paychecks and making direct depositsCalculating overtime, holiday, and vacation payPreparing and issuing tax forms, such as W-2s and 1099sReconciling payroll reports for accuracyAddressing and resolving any payroll discrepanciesMaintaining employee records related to payroll dataProviding relevant payroll reports to the accounting department for reviewAssisting with internal and external audits related to payrollProviding support for employee inquiries related to payroll issues
