Site Reliability Engineer Job Description

Site reliability engineers develop and maintain computer systems and monitor application performance. These professionals use software engineering principles and coding and automation skills to solve infrastructure and operations problems and create highly scalable and reliable systems. Site reliability engineers can be involved in all aspects of software, application or system development. Strong problem-solving, organizational, analytical and communication skills are essential for this role. Employers value candidates with formal training in common programming languages, such as C++ and Java, and experience working with different types of operating and programming platforms, Linux, and cloud computing systems. A bachelor’s degree in computer science is often preferred.

Typical site reliability engineer duties:

Implementing systems, applications, and software, and testing these IT assets to ensure they are secure and functioning properlyUsing monitoring and metrics to diagnose and respond to issues such as outages and participating in post-event analysesWorking with technical support teams, helping with support tickets or defects, and providing emergency supportDocumenting historical knowledge and creating runbooks that other tech teams can reference for problem-solving and incident response
