Senior Law Clerk Job Description

A Senior Law Clerk is a highly experienced and specialized legal professional who provides advanced support to lawyers in a specific area of law. This role involves managing complex legal files, drafting intricate legal documents, conducting substantive legal research, and often acting as a primary point of contact for clients or external parties under lawyer supervision. The Senior Law Clerk is expected to work with a high degree of independence, exercise sound judgment, and mentor junior law clerks or legal assistants. This position demands deep knowledge of legal procedures and principles within their practice area, exceptional organizational and analytical skills, and meticulous attention to detail. Typically, 5-8 years of progressive experience as a Law Clerk in a relevant practice area is required. A Law Clerk Diploma/Certificate from an accredited Canadian institution is essential. A comprehensive understanding of Canadian legal processes, court rules, and relevant statutes is paramount.

Typical senior law clerk duties:

Manage and organize complex legal files from inception to conclusion.Draft advanced legal documents (e.g., pleadings, agreements, closing documents) with minimal supervision.Conduct comprehensive legal research using various databases and resources.Prepare for and assist lawyers with court appearances, closings, or transactions.Liaise directly with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.Oversee and ensure compliance with court rules, filing deadlines, and procedural requirements.Mentor and provide guidance to junior law clerks and legal assistants.Maintain accurate records and manage crucial dates and calendars.
