Junior Accountant Job Description

A Junior Accountant is an entry-level professional who provides essential support to the accounting department, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This role involves performing fundamental accounting tasks, such as data entry, reconciliations, assisting with accounts payable and receivable, and supporting month-end close processes. The Junior Accountant works under the guidance of senior accountants or a controller, gaining practical experience in various accounting functions and software systems. This position demands strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, a solid grasp of basic accounting principles, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Typically, 0-3 years of experience in accounting or a related field, or relevant co-op/internship experience, is required. A Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration is essential, with a keen interest in pursuing a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. A foundational understanding of Canadian accounting practices is preferred.

Typical junior accountant duties:

Perform daily accounting tasks, including data entry and ledger maintenance.Assist with accounts payable processes, such as invoice coding and payment preparation.Support accounts receivable functions, including cash application and reconciliation.Conduct bank reconciliations and other basic account reconciliations.Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures, including journal entries.Prepare basic financial reports and schedules as required.Maintain organized financial records and documentation.Support senior accounting staff with various ad-hoc tasks and projects.
