Following a successful CEO placement for a national member-based organisation, the newly appointed CEO initiated a strategic reshuffle of the senior leadership team. One of the key outcomes was the creation of a new executive role: Chief Revenue Officer (CRO). This role was formed by consolidating three critical functions: sales, marketing, and partnerships - under one strategic leader to align go-to-market efforts, improve customer traction, and reverse declining revenue trends. The organisation sought what could only be described as a “unicorn” candidate: a commercial leader with deep, hands-on expertise across sales, digital marketing, and strategic partnerships. They needed someone capable of bridging historically siloed departments, reshaping customer experience, and delivering sustainable revenue growth.

In close collaboration with the CEO and Board, we defined the ideal candidate profile and identified a set of comparative organisations and target industries. Drawing on our extensive national network and prior success in commercial leadership searches, we launched a targeted campaign across NSW, VIC, and QLD, ultimately generating a longlist of 150 qualified candidates across Australia. From this pool, we built a shortlist of 10 high-calibre candidates, each offering unique combinations of sales, marketing, and partnership experience. All 10 proceeded to first-stage interviews, with four advancing to second-round panels, and three finalists presenting detailed go-to-market strategies to the board and executive leadership team. One standout candidate was selected. Despite having a three-month notice period and a restraint-of-trade clause, we successfully negotiated terms that allowed a smooth and compliant onboarding process, with no delays or legal issues.
