A Purchasing Manager leads procurement activities to ensure organizations have access to the materials, equipment and services needed to support operational goals. They develop purchasing strategies, manage supplier relationships, oversee procurement processes, negotiate contracts and improve sourcing activities while balancing cost, quality, availability and business requirements.

Working closely with supply chain, manufacturing, production, finance, engineering and business leaders, Purchasing Managers strengthen supplier partnerships, reduce supply risk and support efficient, resilient business operations.

Typical purchasing manager duties:

Develop and execute purchasing strategies that support production schedules, inventory targets and business objectives.

Lead procurement activities for raw materials, packaging, operating supplies, services and capital equipment required for manufacturing and business operations.

Manage supplier relationships by evaluating performance, maintaining service standards and ensuring quality, reliability and supply continuity.

Negotiate pricing, contracts, commercial terms and supplier agreements to optimize costs, value and supply chain resilience.

Monitor market conditions, material pricing, supplier capacity and availability to support sourcing decisions, budgeting and procurement planning.

Collaborate with production, finance, engineering, inventory and supply chain teams to align purchasing activities with operational requirements and demand forecasts.

Oversee purchase order processes, monitor order status and resolve issues related to delivery, billing, quality and supplier performance.

Evaluate suppliers using performance metrics related to cost, quality, service and delivery, and implement corrective actions when needed.

Lead strategic sourcing activities, including supplier identification, qualification, selection and relationship management.

Support procurement of manufacturing capital equipment by coordinating activities with global suppliers and internal stakeholders.

Maintain procurement documentation, including contracts, supplier records and purchasing data, while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and requirements.

Utilize procurement systems, ERP platforms and reporting tools to improve visibility, data accuracy and operational performance.

Analyze purchasing data and supplier trends to identify cost savings, process improvements and supply chain optimization opportunities.

Improve procurement workflows, reduce lead times and enhance purchasing processes.

Support responsible sourcing initiatives and supplier practices aligned with organizational standards and objectives.
