Junior Staff Accountant job description

A Junior Staff Accountant supports accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries, processing transactions, reconciling accounts and assisting with financial reporting and month-end and year-end close processes. Working closely with accounting teams, finance professionals and other business stakeholders, they help ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information, support reporting and compliance requirements, contribute to process improvements and maintain efficient accounting operations that support sound financial decision-making.

Typical junior staff accountant duties:

Prepare and record journal entries, account adjustments and financial transactions in accordance with accounting policies and procedures.Assist with month-end and year-end close activities, including account reconciliations, supporting schedules and financial reporting preparation.Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, credit card accounts and other balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.Review financial data, invoices, expense reports and supporting documentation to verify accuracy and proper accounting treatment.Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including transaction processing, invoice review and payment tracking.Maintain organized accounting records, documentation and supporting schedules to support audits and compliance requirements.Support the preparation of financial reports, management reports and internal accounting analyses.Investigate discrepancies, resolve basic accounting issues and escalate complex matters to senior accounting team members.Support tax preparation activities, including gathering financial information and maintaining documentation for Canadian tax reporting requirements.Maintain knowledge of accounting standards, organizational policies and applicable Canadian financial reporting requirements.Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
