Company Accountant job description

The Company Accountant is responsible for managing the full spectrum of financial operations, ensuring compliance with New Zealand accounting standards and IRD regulations. This role plays a key part in supporting strategic decision-making by delivering accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis.

Company Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Company Accountant include:

Preparing monthly financial statements and variance analyses in line with NZ IFRS

Managing end-to-end general ledger accounting, including journal entries and reconciliations

Overseeing GST, PAYE, FBT, and provisional tax filings to ensure compliance with IRD requirements

Leading the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with business unit managers

Coordinating the external audit process and preparing supporting documentation

Monitoring cash flow and preparing regular cash flow forecasts

Maintaining fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules

Ensuring integrity of financial systems and supporting continuous improvements

Providing financial insights and reports to senior management and stakeholders across New Zealand

Supporting payroll and accounts processing where required

Company Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification is required. Candidates should have at least 4–6 years of accounting experience, including responsibility for end-to-end financial reporting.

Requirements include:

Strong understanding of NZ IFRS and IRD obligations, including GST, PAYE, and FBT

Proficiency with financial systems such as Xero, MYOB, or SAP

Demonstrated experience preparing budgets, forecasts, and management reports

Ability to lead month-end and year-end close processes with minimal supervision

Experience liaising with external auditors and regulatory bodies

Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills
