Group Accountant job description

The Group Accountant is responsible for consolidating financial results across multiple entities and ensuring accurate group-level reporting in accordance with New Zealand accounting standards. This role supports senior finance leadership with high-quality insights and ensures compliance with all IRD and NZ IFRS requirements.

Group Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Group Accountant include:

Preparing consolidated monthly and annual financial statements in line with NZ IFRS

Managing intercompany reconciliations and eliminations across multiple New Zealand and international entities

Coordinating group budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling activities

Overseeing compliance with IRD obligations, including GST, PAYE, FBT, and provisional tax across entities

Supporting the external audit process and ensuring timely delivery of group audit packs

Developing and maintaining group accounting policies and procedures

Providing financial analyses and commentary to support board reporting and strategic planning

Ensuring accurate data integration across financial systems (e.g. SAP, Xero, MYOB)

Assisting with treasury, funding, and foreign currency exposure reporting

Liaising with finance teams and stakeholders across New Zealand to support consistent reporting standards

Group Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification is required. Candidates should have at least 5–7 years of experience in financial accounting, with prior exposure to group consolidation and reporting.

Requirements include:

Proven experience preparing consolidated financial statements under NZ IFRS

Strong understanding of IRD compliance requirements across multiple entities

Proficiency in enterprise financial systems such as SAP, Xero, or MYOB Advanced

Advanced Excel skills for financial modelling and data analysis

Experience working with external auditors and supporting group audits

Excellent attention to detail, analytical capability, and stakeholder communication skills
