The Cost Accountant is responsible for analysing production and operational costs to support effective financial control and strategic decision-making. This role ensures accurate cost allocation, monitors variances, and provides insights into cost efficiency across the organisation’s operations.

Cost Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Cost Accountant include:

Preparing and analysing standard and actual costs for products or services

Conducting cost variance analysis and providing explanations for deviations

Supporting the month-end close process through journal entries and cost adjustments

Collaborating with operational teams across New Zealand to maintain accurate inventory and cost records

Reviewing and updating bill of materials and labour costing

Assisting in budgeting and forecasting, particularly for manufacturing or operational expenses

Developing and maintaining cost models to support pricing and profitability analysis

Ensuring compliance with NZ IFRS and internal control standards

Preparing reports on cost trends and operational efficiency for management review

Working with auditors and supporting cost-related audit schedules

Cost Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting or finance and full membership with CA ANZ or CPA Australia is required, as well as 3–5 years’ experience in cost accounting or management accounting roles.

Requirements include:

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in cost modelling, variance analysis, and cost allocation

Proficiency with ERP and accounting systems (e.g. SAP, MYOB, Xero)

Solid understanding of NZ IFRS, cost accounting principles, and internal financial controls

Proven experience in inventory accounting and manufacturing cost structures

Effective communication skills to collaborate across finance, operations, and supply chain teams in New Zealand

Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and cost reduction initiatives

Ability to support pricing strategies and margin analysis

Understanding of standard costing and activity-based costing (ABC)
