The Cost Accountant is responsible for analysing production and operational costs to support effective financial control and strategic decision-making. This role ensures accurate cost allocation, monitors variances, and provides insights into cost efficiency across the organisation’s operations.

Cost Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Cost Accountant include:Preparing and analysing standard and actual costs for products or servicesConducting cost variance analysis and providing explanations for deviations Supporting the month-end close process through journal entries and cost adjustmentsCollaborating with operational teams across New Zealand to maintain accurate inventory and cost recordsReviewing and updating bill of materials and labour costingAssisting in budgeting and forecasting, particularly for manufacturing or operational expensesDeveloping and maintaining cost models to support pricing and profitability analysisEnsuring compliance with NZ IFRS and internal control standardsPreparing reports on cost trends and operational efficiency for management reviewWorking with auditors and supporting cost-related audit schedules

Cost Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting or finance and full membership with CA ANZ or CPA Australia is required, as well as 3–5 years’ experience in cost accounting or management accounting roles.Requirements include:Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in cost modelling, variance analysis, and cost allocationProficiency with ERP and accounting systems (e.g. SAP, MYOB, Xero)Solid understanding of NZ IFRS, cost accounting principles, and internal financial controlsProven experience in inventory accounting and manufacturing cost structuresEffective communication skills to collaborate across finance, operations, and supply chain teams in New ZealandExperience in budgeting, forecasting, and cost reduction initiativesAbility to support pricing strategies and margin analysisUnderstanding of standard costing and activity-based costing (ABC)
