The Public Relations Director is a senior executive responsible for defining, directing and executing the organization’s overall public relations and communications strategy. This role is crucial to building and maintaining a positive brand reputation, managing corporate communications and navigating the media landscape. The Public Relations Director acts as a key spokesperson for the business, strategically shaping public perception and stakeholder relationships. They lead a team of public relations professionals, overseeing all media relations, crisis communications and internal communications efforts. Candidates must possess exceptional communication, strategic thinking and leadership skills, with a proven ability to manage complex public relations challenges. Typically, more than 15 years of progressive experience in public relations, corporate communications or a related field, including a significant portion in a leadership role, is required. Experience in Canadian media relations, government communications, and a thorough understanding of the country’s diverse and multicultural landscape is a critical requirement.

Typical public relation director duties:

Develop and execute a comprehensive PR strategy aligned with organizational objectives and brand vision.Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization, building and maintaining strong relationships with leading media, journalists and industry influencers.Lead all planning and response to crisis communications, managing sensitive issues to protect brand reputation.Oversee the creation of all corporate communication materials, including press releases, press kits, speeches and internal communications.Manages and mentors a high-performing PR team, fostering a culture of strategic thinking and proactive communication.Collaborate with executive committee (C-Suite), marketing, legal and other departments to ensure consistent and integrated messaging across all platforms.Monitor media coverage and public sentiment, providing strategic analysis and recommendations to executive management.Keep abreast of Canadian public policy, regulatory changes and evolving media trends to inform communication strategies.
