Logistics Manager job description

A Logistics Manager oversees transportation, distribution and logistics operations to ensure the efficient movement of goods, materials and products throughout the supply chain. They develop logistics strategies, optimize processes, manage resources, monitor performance and coordinate transportation and distribution activities to improve efficiency, reduce costs and support business objectives.

Working closely with supply chain teams, transportation providers, warehouse operations, procurement, planning teams and business leaders, Logistics Managers help strengthen logistics execution, improve reliability and enhance overall supply chain performance.

Typical logistics manager duties:

Lead logistics and distribution operations to ensure timely, cost-effective and reliable movement of materials, inventory and finished goods.

Develop and execute transportation strategies, including carrier management, shipment planning and delivery scheduling to support operational requirements.

Manage relationships with transportation providers, freight partners, brokers and logistics service providers to maintain service quality and operational reliability.

Negotiate freight rates, contracts, service agreements and commercial terms to improve value and support cost management objectives.

Monitor logistics performance, transportation costs, shipment activity and service levels to identify improvement opportunities and operational risks.

Develop and maintain logistics reports, dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) to provide visibility into transportation and distribution performance.

Analyze logistics data and trends to support budgeting, forecasting, capacity planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

Collaborate with supply chain, warehouse, procurement, operations and planning teams to align logistics activities with business needs and customer requirements.

Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, reduce costs and improve scalability across logistics operations.

Familiarity with customs declaration, Commercial Invoices and Bill of Landing Support logistics technology systems, including transportation management systems (TMS), warehouse management systems (WMS) and related supply chain platforms.

Ensure logistics processes align with organizational policies, industry standards and operational requirements.

Lead, coach and support logistics teams while promoting accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
