The Payroll Clerk supports the payroll function by ensuring accurate data entry, maintaining employee records, and assisting with the preparation and processing of payroll in compliance with Fair Work legislation and ATO requirements. This role contributes to the smooth operation of the payroll cycle and provides administrative support to the broader finance or HR team.

Key responsibilities of a Payroll Clerk in the finance and accounting sector include:Entering and updating employee payroll data in the payroll systemAssisting with the preparation and processing of regular payroll runsVerifying timesheets, leave forms, and attendance data for accuracySupporting the calculation of wages, allowances, and deductionsAssisting in the processing of superannuation, PAYG, and other statutory obligationsResponding to basic payroll queries and providing timely support to employeesMaintaining accurate payroll records and filing documentation in line with compliance requirementsAssisting with payroll reconciliations and audits as directed by senior payroll staffSupporting the preparation of payroll reports and summariesEnsuring data privacy and security of employee informationUsing payroll and HRIS systems such as MYOB, Xero, Chris21, or ADP

Typical Payroll Clerk job qualifications and requirements

A certificate in payroll administration, accounting, or business is preferred. 1–2 years’ experience in a payroll or administrative role is expected.Basic understanding of payroll processes and Fair Work complianceProficiency in payroll or accounting software (e.g. MYOB, Xero, Chris21, ADP)Accurate data entry and strong attention to detailGood organisational and time management skillsStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to handle confidential information with discretionFamiliarity with PAYG, STP, and superannuation processing is advantageousCompetence with Microsoft Office, especially Excel for data handling and reporting
