The Junior Software Engineer supports the design, development, and maintenance of software applications under the guidance of senior developers. This role contributes to coding, testing, and debugging efforts while gaining exposure to secure development practices and New Zealand compliance standards.

Junior Software Engineer duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Junior Software Engineer include:

Writing and testing clean, efficient, and maintainable code based on technical specifications

Assisting with debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving application issues

Participating in code reviews and learning from senior engineering team members

Collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand user requirements and deliver solutions

Contributing to documentation of code, system architecture, and development processes

Supporting deployment, testing, and release activities

Ensuring development practices align with the NZ Privacy Act and secure coding standards

Continuously developing technical skills through on-the-job learning and training opportunities

Junior Software Engineer job qualifications and requirements

A degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field is required.

Requirements include:

0–2 years’ experience in software development or graduate-level project work

Basic understanding of software development principles and modern programming languages (e.g. JavaScript, Python, Java, C#)

Familiarity with version control systems such as Git

Awareness of New Zealand privacy and cybersecurity best practices in software development

Eagerness to learn, strong problem-solving skills, and attention to detail

Effective communication and teamwork skills within agile or collaborative environments
