What is a financial analyst?

The quality of a business’ commercial decisions are due, in part, to the insights provided by their financial analyst. They drive business objectives by determining the best use of resource, and generate regular reports based on the data they accumulate. They work as part of the wider finance team to analyse business performance and create strategy.

Financial analyst job description and responsibilities

The majority of financial analyst duties centre around researching and reporting on financial information, including analysis of the financial market as a whole. Tasks include:

Assessing the economic performance of organisations

Identifying market trends

Developing financial forecasts

Measuring financial risk

Gathering and analysing financial data

Creating commercial plans in collaboration with the management team

Financial analyst qualifications, skills and experience

The current economic climate across the UK and Europe has prompted businesses to search for professionals with experience in financial modelling. It has become one of the most in-demand skills for this particular profession.

A degree isn’t strictly necessary for the role, but a CIMA, ACA or ACCA qualification or part qualification is very attractive to employers. Professionals who do hold a degree should ideally have a 1:1 or 2:1 grade.

They should also possess some of the following qualities and skills:

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
