Key responsibilities of a Payroll Manager include:Managing the end-to-end payroll process for all employees, including regular, off-cycle, and termination paymentsEnsuring compliance with tax, superannuation, and industrial relations obligationsInterpreting awards, enterprise agreements, and statutory requirementsLeading payroll audits and managing reporting obligations to internal and external stakeholdersMaintaining payroll systems and recommending process improvementsResponding to payroll-related queries and resolving discrepanciesManaging payroll-related projects, such as system upgrades or integrationsCollaborating with HR, finance, and external providers to ensure data accuracySupervising and mentoring payroll staffEnsure compliance with Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting requirements to the ATO

Typical Payroll Manager job qualifications and requirements

A qualification in accounting, business, or human resources is preferred. Substantial experience in managing payroll operations is essential, with a deep understanding of relevant legislation and systems.Proven experience in end-to-end payroll processing and team leadershipIn-depth knowledge of Fair Work legislation, superannuation, and payroll tax obligationsStrong understanding of Single Touch Payroll (STP) and ATO compliance requirementsFamiliarity with enterprise agreements, award interpretation, and state-based payroll legislationExperience managing payroll across multiple states or entities, including complex terminations, redundancies, and leave calculationsKnowledge of long service leave entitlements and modern award conditionsProficiency in payroll systems such as SAP, Chris21, ADP, or similar platformsFamiliarity with year-end processes including payment summaries, reconciliations, and audit preparationAbility to lead or support payroll system upgrades, integrations, or process automationStrong attention to detail and high level of numerical accuracyExcellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skillsAbility to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion
