The Payroll Manager oversees the end-to-end payroll function to ensure accurate and timely processing of employee compensation. This role is critical in maintaining compliance with relevant employment legislation, awards, and tax obligations, while delivering a seamless payroll experience for staff.

Key responsibilities of a Payroll Manager include:

Managing the end-to-end payroll process for all employees, including regular, off-cycle, and termination payments

Ensuring compliance with tax, superannuation, and industrial relations obligations

Interpreting awards, enterprise agreements, and statutory requirements

Leading payroll audits and managing reporting obligations to internal and external stakeholders

Maintaining payroll systems and recommending process improvements

Responding to payroll-related queries and resolving discrepancies

Managing payroll-related projects, such as system upgrades or integrations

Collaborating with HR, finance, and external providers to ensure data accuracy

Supervising and mentoring payroll staff

Ensure compliance with Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting requirements to the ATO

Typical Payroll Manager job qualifications and requirements

A qualification in accounting, business, or human resources is preferred. Substantial experience in managing payroll operations is essential, with a deep understanding of relevant legislation and systems.

Proven experience in end-to-end payroll processing and team leadership

In-depth knowledge of Fair Work legislation, superannuation, and payroll tax obligations

Strong understanding of Single Touch Payroll (STP) and ATO compliance requirements

Familiarity with enterprise agreements, award interpretation, and state-based payroll legislation

Experience managing payroll across multiple states or entities, including complex terminations, redundancies, and leave calculations

Knowledge of long service leave entitlements and modern award conditions

Proficiency in payroll systems such as SAP, Chris21, ADP, or similar platforms

Familiarity with year-end processes including payment summaries, reconciliations, and audit preparation

Ability to lead or support payroll system upgrades, integrations, or process automation

Strong attention to detail and high level of numerical accuracy

Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion
