Typical Cyber-Security Manager job qualifications and requirements

A bachelor’s degree in cyber security, IT, or a related discipline is essential, with certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CISA highly regarded. Significant experience in cyber-security leadership roles is required, along with a strong understanding of evolving threat landscapes.

5+ years’ experience in information or cyber security, including team leadership or strategic oversight

Strong understanding of cyber threats, vulnerability management, risk assessment, and incident response

Hands-on experience with security technologies such as SIEM (e.g. Splunk), firewalls, IDS/IPS, endpoint protection, and cloud security platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, M365 Defender)

Familiarity with key compliance and security frameworks including ISO/IEC 27001, ASD Essential Eight, NIST, and GDPR (with APRA CPS 234 for financial services)

Proven ability to lead security operations, define policies, and manage security governance

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including reporting to executive and board-level audiences

Experience managing third-party vendors and security risk in supply chains

Ability to build, lead, and mentor a high-performing cyber security team

Proficiency in security risk assessments, audits, and security awareness training initiatives

Experience with security strategy development and alignment with broader IT and business goals
