The Business Analyst (Finance and Accounting) acts as a strategic link between finance operations and business units, delivering data-driven insights to improve financial performance, optimise processes, and support decision-making. This role is pivotal in translating financial data into actionable analysis, enhancing forecasting accuracy, and driving operational efficiency across the organisation.

Key responsibilities of a Business Analyst in the finance and accounting sector include:

Analysing financial performance, budgets, and forecasts to identify trends and variances

Partnering with stakeholders to develop and refine financial models and business cases

Supporting month-end and year-end reporting with insightful analysis and commentary

Collaborating with finance teams to optimise reporting processes and system outputs

Identifying cost-saving opportunities and revenue improvement initiatives through data analysis

Providing input into strategic planning, investment decisions, and operational reviews

Developing dashboards and reports using BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik

Ensuring data accuracy and consistency across finance systems and reports

Documenting business requirements and translating them into functional specifications

Assisting in ERP upgrades or implementations from a finance perspective

Conducting scenario and sensitivity analyses to support business planning

Liaising with IT and finance teams to automate and streamline reporting and analytics

Typical Business Analyst (Finance and Accounting) job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, commerce, finance, or economics is required. Progress toward CPA Australia or CA ANZ is highly regarded. 4–6 years’ experience in financial or business analysis roles is expected.

Strong analytical and financial modelling skills

Proficiency in data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Qlik) and Excel

Experience with ERP systems (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Workday) and finance data structures

Deep understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis

Ability to translate complex financial data into clear insights and recommendations

Familiarity with AASB standards and financial reporting processes

Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills

Experience in process improvement and business case development

Exposure to project delivery or system transformation initiatives is advantageous
