The Systems Engineer is responsible for deploying, configuring, and maintaining the organisation’s IT systems and infrastructure, ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance across New Zealand operations. This role supports both project delivery and day-to-day operations within hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.

Systems Engineer duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Systems Engineer include:Installing, configuring, and supporting servers, storage, and cloud infrastructureManaging Active Directory, Group Policy, Microsoft 365, and virtualisation platforms (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V)Ensuring system security and compliance with the NZ Privacy Act and ISO 27001 standardsMonitoring system health and performance, responding to incidents and proactively resolving issuesSupporting backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning and implementationCollaborating with network, security, and application teams to deliver integrated solutionsAutomating system tasks using scripting tools such as PowerShellMaintaining documentation for infrastructure, procedures, and change managementAssisting with system upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management of infrastructure assets

Systems Engineer job qualifications and requirements

A diploma or degree in information technology, systems engineering, or a related field is required. Industry certifications (e.g. Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA) are advantageous.Requirements include:3+ years’ experience in systems engineering or infrastructure rolesProficiency with Windows Server, Microsoft 365, virtualisation, and storage technologiesExperience in cloud environments such as Azure or AWSStrong understanding of New Zealand cybersecurity and data privacy requirementsDemonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issuesExcellent communication and documentation skillsAbility to support both BAU operations and project-based work
