The Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, and managing cloud infrastructure to support secure, scalable, and resilient services across the organisation. This role plays a key part in optimising cloud performance, ensuring cost-efficiency, and aligning with New Zealand cybersecurity and data compliance standards.

Cloud Engineer duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Cloud Engineer include:

Building and maintaining cloud environments using platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud

Automating infrastructure deployment using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or ARM templates

Monitoring and optimising cloud performance, availability, and costs

Ensuring cloud environments comply with the NZ Privacy Act, ISO 27001, and relevant security policies

Implementing cloud backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions

Supporting cloud migration and modernisation projects for legacy systems

Managing identity and access control using tools such as Azure AD or AWS IAM

Collaborating with security, development, and operations teams to deliver integrated cloud solutions

Documenting architecture, configurations, and procedures for audit readiness and operational support

Cloud Engineer job qualifications and requirements

A degree in computer science, cloud computing, or a related field is required. Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional are advantageous.

Requirements include:

3+ years’ experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles

Strong hands-on experience with public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)

Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g. PowerShell, Python, Terraform)

Understanding of networking, security, and storage in cloud environments

Familiarity with New Zealand data governance and cloud security requirements

Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and stakeholder communication skills
