The Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, and managing cloud infrastructure to support secure, scalable, and resilient services across the organisation. This role plays a key part in optimising cloud performance, ensuring cost-efficiency, and aligning with New Zealand cybersecurity and data compliance standards.

Cloud Engineer duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Cloud Engineer include:Building and maintaining cloud environments using platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google CloudAutomating infrastructure deployment using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or ARM templatesMonitoring and optimising cloud performance, availability, and costsEnsuring cloud environments comply with the NZ Privacy Act, ISO 27001, and relevant security policiesImplementing cloud backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutionsSupporting cloud migration and modernisation projects for legacy systemsManaging identity and access control using tools such as Azure AD or AWS IAMCollaborating with security, development, and operations teams to deliver integrated cloud solutionsDocumenting architecture, configurations, and procedures for audit readiness and operational support

Cloud Engineer job qualifications and requirements

A degree in computer science, cloud computing, or a related field is required. Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional are advantageous.Requirements include:3+ years’ experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure rolesStrong hands-on experience with public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g. PowerShell, Python, Terraform)Understanding of networking, security, and storage in cloud environmentsFamiliarity with New Zealand data governance and cloud security requirementsStrong troubleshooting, documentation, and stakeholder communication skills
