The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimisation of database systems to ensure data integrity, performance, and security across New Zealand operations. This role supports day-to-day database activities and ensures compliance with local data governance standards.

Database Administrator duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Database Administrator include:Installing, configuring, and maintaining database management systems (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)Monitoring database performance and tuning queries to optimise speed and reliabilityManaging backups, restores, and disaster recovery plans in accordance with business continuity requirementsEnsuring compliance with the NZ Privacy Act, ISO 27001, and internal data governance policiesImplementing access controls, encryption, and audit logs to secure sensitive dataSupporting database migrations, upgrades, and patching activitiesTroubleshooting database issues and providing support to developers and system administratorsDocumenting database configurations, processes, and standard operating procedures

Database Administrator job qualifications and requirements

A degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field is required.Requirements include:3+ years’ experience as a DBA managing production environmentsStrong proficiency in SQL and database performance tuningExperience with backup strategies, high availability, and disaster recovery planningFamiliarity with New Zealand data protection laws and compliance obligationsProficiency in database tools and platforms (e.g. SSMS, Oracle Enterprise Manager, pgAdmin)Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skillsAbility to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
