The Head of Treasury is responsible for managing the financial services organisation’s capital, liquidity, funding, and financial risk. This senior leadership role ensures that the business maintains a strong and compliant treasury function aligned with its strategic and regulatory obligations.

Key responsibilities of a Head of Treasury in the financial services sector include:

Developing and executing the organisation’s treasury strategy

Managing liquidity, funding, and capital adequacy in line with regulatory requirements

Overseeing cash flow forecasting, balance sheet management, and investment activities

Monitoring interest rate, FX, and credit risk exposures

Ensuring compliance with APRA prudential standards, including APS 210 and APS 222

Leading treasury reporting for internal stakeholders and regulatory submissions

Managing relationships with banks, investors, and rating agencies

Advising senior management and the board on treasury risk and financial policy

Leading and developing the treasury team to deliver operational excellence

Conducting stress testing and scenario modelling to inform capital and liquidity planning

Supporting regulatory change, capital strategy, and funding diversification initiatives

Typical Head of Treasury job qualifications and requirements

A strong background in finance or economics with deep treasury expertise is essential, along with a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or a related field. CFA certification or postgraduate qualifications in treasury or financial risk management are considered advantageous.

Key skills and attributes for success in this role include:

Significant experience in treasury, capital management, or financial risk functions

Strong knowledge of APRA regulatory standards, including CPS 220, 510, and treasury governance frameworks

Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities

Advanced understanding of financial instruments, liquidity management, and balance sheet strategy

Proficiency in treasury management systems and financial modelling tools

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Strong capability in strategic planning, stress testing, and scenario modelling

Sound understanding of risk, compliance, and capital adequacy frameworks (e.g. ICAAP, ILAAP)
