The Tax Manager leads the organisation’s tax strategy, compliance, and advisory functions to ensure full alignment with New Zealand tax laws and optimal tax outcomes. This senior role oversees all aspects of tax reporting, risk management, and planning while supporting strategic decision-making across New Zealand operations.

Tax Manager duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Tax Manager include:Managing end-to-end tax compliance, including GST, FBT, PAYE, income tax, and provisional tax filings in line with IRD requirementsLeading tax planning initiatives to optimise the organisation’s tax position and support commercial objectivesOverseeing transfer pricing documentation, intercompany transactions, and international tax complianceProviding strategic tax advice to senior leadership on business operations, investments, and restructuresMonitoring legislative changes and advising on implications for tax risk and complianceCoordinating with auditors, IRD, and external tax advisors to manage audits and complex tax mattersEnsuring accurate tax accounting in line with NZ IFRS and supporting financial reporting processesLeading and mentoring a tax team to ensure high-quality, compliant, and timely outputs

Tax Manager job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, taxation, or finance is required. CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification is essential.Requirements include:7+ years’ experience in tax roles within corporate or advisory environments in New ZealandStrong knowledge of New Zealand tax legislation and IRD compliance frameworksDemonstrated experience in tax planning, audit management, and risk mitigationAdvanced proficiency with tax and ERP systems (e.g. SAP, Xero, MYOB)Expertise in transfer pricing, international tax, and NZ IFRS reporting standardsExcellent stakeholder engagement, leadership, and communication skills
