The Tax Accountant is responsible for managing tax compliance, reporting, and advisory functions to ensure full adherence to New Zealand tax legislation. This role supports accurate and timely lodgement of all tax obligations while providing insights to optimise tax outcomes across the business.

Tax Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Tax Accountant include:Preparing and lodging tax returns including GST, PAYE, FBT, provisional and income tax in compliance with IRD requirementsEnsuring timely reconciliation of tax accounts and resolving discrepancies with the IRDAssisting with tax planning initiatives and providing advice on the tax impact of business decisionsSupporting the preparation of year-end tax packs and liaising with external tax advisors and auditorsMonitoring changes to New Zealand tax legislation and advising on their implicationsMaintaining accurate tax records and supporting documentation for audit readinessAssisting with transfer pricing, intercompany transactions, and withholding tax compliance where relevantCollaborating with finance teams to ensure tax treatments align with NZ IFRS standards

Tax Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, taxation, or finance is required. CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification (or working towards) is preferred.Requirements include:2–4 years’ experience in a tax accounting role within New ZealandStrong knowledge of IRD tax requirements including GST, FBT, PAYE, and income taxFamiliarity with New Zealand corporate tax rules and reporting standardsProficiency with accounting systems (e.g. Xero, MYOB, SAP) and ExcelHigh attention to detail and strong analytical skillsAbility to communicate complex tax concepts to non-financial stakeholders
