The Senior Tax Accountant leads the preparation, review, and strategic oversight of tax compliance and advisory functions, ensuring alignment with New Zealand tax legislation and business objectives. This role partners with internal stakeholders and external advisors to optimise tax outcomes and mitigate risk across New Zealand operations.

Senior Tax Accountant duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Senior Tax Accountant include:Reviewing and preparing complex tax returns including GST, FBT, PAYE, income tax, and provisional tax in compliance with IRD requirementsManaging tax reconciliations, ensuring accuracy across general ledger and tax filingsProviding tax advisory support on business transactions, restructures, and cross-border mattersMonitoring legislative updates and advising on impacts to tax compliance and reportingSupporting transfer pricing documentation and intercompany transaction reviewsLeading tax components of year-end reporting, audits, and liaising with external advisors and IRDDeveloping and improving tax processes, controls, and documentation for audit readinessCollaborating with finance and legal teams to ensure NZ IFRS compliance in tax treatments

Senior Tax Accountant job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, taxation, or finance is required. CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification is essential.Requirements include:5+ years’ experience in New Zealand tax compliance and advisoryIn-depth knowledge of IRD obligations and NZ corporate tax legislationExperience with tax planning, audit support, and stakeholder engagementStrong understanding of transfer pricing, withholding tax, and international tax conceptsProficiency with tax and accounting systems (e.g. SAP, Xero, MYOB)High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication and reporting abilities across financial and non-financial teams
