The Internal Auditor provides independent assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and compliance processes across the organisation. This role supports continuous improvement by evaluating business operations against regulatory standards and organisational policies, with a focus on New Zealand-based activities.

Internal Auditor duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of an Internal Auditor include:

Conducting risk-based internal audits in line with the annual audit plan

Evaluating internal controls, financial systems, and operational processes for effectiveness and compliance

Preparing audit reports with findings, recommendations, and agreed action plans

Monitoring follow-up actions and ensuring timely resolution of audit issues

Assessing compliance with IRD obligations, NZ IFRS, and relevant legislation

Identifying opportunities for process improvement and cost efficiency

Liaising with senior management and stakeholders to communicate audit outcomes

Supporting external audit processes and coordinating with third-party auditors as required

Ensuring audit activities align with professional standards and internal audit frameworks

Internal Auditor job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification (or working towards) is preferred.

Requirements include:

3+ years’ experience in internal or external audit

Sound understanding of internal control frameworks, risk management, and audit methodology

Knowledge of New Zealand regulatory requirements and financial reporting standards

Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills

Excellent communication and report-writing abilities

Proficiency with audit and financial systems (e.g. SAP, Excel, TeamMate)

Ability to work independently and manage multiple audit assignments
