The Internal Auditor provides independent assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and compliance processes across the organisation. This role supports continuous improvement by evaluating business operations against regulatory standards and organisational policies, with a focus on New Zealand-based activities.

Internal Auditor duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of an Internal Auditor include:Conducting risk-based internal audits in line with the annual audit planEvaluating internal controls, financial systems, and operational processes for effectiveness and compliancePreparing audit reports with findings, recommendations, and agreed action plansMonitoring follow-up actions and ensuring timely resolution of audit issuesAssessing compliance with IRD obligations, NZ IFRS, and relevant legislationIdentifying opportunities for process improvement and cost efficiencyLiaising with senior management and stakeholders to communicate audit outcomesSupporting external audit processes and coordinating with third-party auditors as requiredEnsuring audit activities align with professional standards and internal audit frameworks

Internal Auditor job qualifications and requirements

A degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. CA ANZ or CPA Australia qualification (or working towards) is preferred.Requirements include:3+ years’ experience in internal or external auditSound understanding of internal control frameworks, risk management, and audit methodologyKnowledge of New Zealand regulatory requirements and financial reporting standardsStrong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication and report-writing abilitiesProficiency with audit and financial systems (e.g. SAP, Excel, TeamMate)Ability to work independently and manage multiple audit assignments
