June 2026 jobs report: Employers add 57,000 jobs

Labor Market Trends Hiring trends Research and insights Article
Hiring in the U.S. cooled sharply in June, with employers adding just 57,000 jobs, according to the latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That figure is well short of economists’ expectations for between 100,000 and 115,000 jobs. The report also included a notable downward revision: The economy added 74,000 fewer jobs in April and May combined than previously reported. That update suggests hiring momentum was softer heading into June than earlier data had indicated.

Unemployment rate dips to lowest level in a year

The national unemployment rate edged down to 4.2% in June, marking its lowest level in a year. Prior to June, the rate had held steady at 4.3% for 3 consecutive months. For college-degreed professionals, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 2.7%. These professionals are among the most sought-after hires for many employers, especially for roles that require specialized skills and experience. Job seeking? Healthcare, professional and business services industries post notable job gains in June

The private education and health services industry added 69,000 jobs last month, according to the BLS. Professional and business services also expanded payrolls in June, with employers adding 36,000 jobs, including 9,300 in temporary help services. These industries also saw gains last month: Construction: 11,000 jobs addedGovernment: 8,000 jobs addedManufacturing: 3,000 jobs addedWholesale trade: 2,400 jobs addedTransportation and warehousing: 2,300 jobs added The June jobs report shows payrolls contracted in several areas, including leisure and hospitality, which shed 61,000 jobs last month, reversing much of its gain of 70,000 jobs in May.

Many professionals eye job changes despite slower hiring

Hiring momentum has been uneven so far this year, but the labor market remains active on both sides. Many employers are still seeking skilled professionals, while many workers are open to making a move. Robert Half research found that 46% of U.S. professionals plan to look for a new job in the second half of this year. That’s up from 38% in the first half of 2026 and 27% one year ago. Many workers surveyed cite better benefits and perks, career advancement opportunities, remote work options and higher salary as top reasons for considering a change. Even if more candidates begin looking for roles, employers are likely to continue to face recruiting challenges, especially for positions requiring specialized skills. Research for Robert Half’s newly updated Demand for Skilled Talent report found that 66% of company leaders plan to increase permanent headcount in the second half of the year. At the same time, 58% of leaders say finding skilled professionals is more difficult than it was a year ago. For employers, the takeaway is clear: A cooler labor market doesn’t eliminate retention risk or make qualified candidates easier to find. Organizations need to stay close to employee concerns, revisit total compensation and career development strategies, and be ready to act when strong candidates are available.
