According to the most recent monthly jobs report, the non-seasonally adjusted San Francisco unemployment rate for February was 3.2 percent, consistent from last month and down 0.6 percentage point from a year ago this time. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, 3,600 San Francisco jobs were added during the same reporting period.
For the state of California, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February was 5.5 percent, down 0.2 percentage point from last month and 1.2 percent year-over-year decrease. Also in February, the state saw seasonally adjusted jobs gains of 39,900.
What does the current data mean for hiring managers looking to staff San Francisco jobs?
Robert Half Senior District President Sharon Black notes, “The fact that the San Francisco unemployment rate is holding steady doesn’t mean employers in the area won’t still face competition for skilled talent.” She urges managers to ramp up the hiring process, and encourages them to be aware of hurdles like additional strain on existing staff. “The last thing you want is for your current employees to feel overburdened and underappreciated. This could lead to them starting job searches of their own.” Black suggests employers check in regularly with their teams to make sure their workloads are manageable. “If your employees are feeling overwhelmed, consider using temporary staffing solutions during the recruitment process.”
Black also advises managers to focus on touting the benefits of their companies, especially since today’s top candidates are receiving multiple offers. Black notes that managers can gain a competitive edge by ensuring salaries are in line with market trends. Additionally, benefits packages should include perks that promote work-life balance. “Advertise the unique aspects of your corporate culture, like employee recognition programs or professional development opportunities,” Black says. “Many of today’s top candidates value these as much as salary.”
