What does this data mean for San Francisco hiring managers?

Robert Half Senior District President Sharon Black emphasizes that collaboration with a company’s HR department is a must when managers are attempting to create an effective hiring strategy. “If you’re going to hire top talent in this market, it’s crucial you’re collaborating across your organization,” she says. Black encourages hiring managers to work closely with human resources to determine the required skills for open positions and to improve the process for evaluating resumes. Doing so eliminates time and energy lost on interviewing candidates who might not fit the bill.

Black also notes that area employers struggling to hire in the San Francisco jobs market can maximize their efforts by evaluating their interview process. “Interviewing is the key to your entire hiring strategy,” she states. To get the full picture of a potential hire, Black suggests trying multiple interviews in different formats, including one-on-one and panel interviews. Additionally, it’s important to deviate from protocol by asking a variety of questions that reveal a clear picture of candidates’ experience, skills and personality. “Ask the traditional questions, use some open-ended questions and don’t be afraid to throw in a curveball or two to see how candidates think on their feet,” Black says.
