According to the most recent monthly jobs report, the non-seasonally adjusted San Francisco unemployment rate for December was 3.2 percent, consistent with the previous month. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, 2,900 San Francisco jobs were added during the same reporting period.

For the state of California, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased slightly to 5.8 percent in December. Statewide, a total of 60,400 jobs were added in the same month, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

What does the report mean for employers looking to staff San Francisco jobs?

Robert Half Senior District President Sharon Black notes that employers in the San Francisco area continue to battle for talent in a hot market. “Companies have to compete with each other for skilled professionals across a number of industries,” she says.

The fierce competition for top candidates means employers need to accelerate recruitment. Black advises managers to evaluate and update their hiring strategy. “On many occasions, the interview and hiring process shapes a candidate’s perception of a business,” she says. “Respect the candidate’s time, and if you’ve found your ideal hire, be prepared to make an offer quickly.” Businesses that take too long to make an offer, she says, will find themselves losing out on talent.

Black also stresses the value of hiring from within. “Sometimes the best candidate for the position already works for your company,” she notes. Instead of spending time interviewing applicants without the requisite skills, she says, managers can invest in training for current staff members. Internal hiring has benefits for employee retention, as well.

“Today’s workers value opportunities for career advancement,” Black says. “Hiring from within can help you keep your best talent around for years to come.”
