Ledgers and Laughs: A Roundup of the Best Accounting Humor

Accounting can be a tough and labor-intensive job, but that doesn't mean you can't have a laugh every once in a while.

If you want to get some laughs from your fellow accounting and finance professionals, there’s plenty of good accounting humor out there. Here are a few of our favorite jokes — consider sharing them around your office water cooler this April Fools’ Day.

  • An accountant is reading nursery rhymes to her young child. When she is finished, she answers her son's question: "No, son. When Little Bo Peep lost her sheep, that wouldn't be tax deductible — but I like your thinking."
  • An accountant is having a hard time sleeping and goes to see his doctor. "Doctor, I just can't get to sleep at night," he says. "Have you tried counting sheep?" inquires the doctor. "That's the problem — I make a mistake and then spend three hours trying to find it."
  • What's the definition of an accountant? Someone who solves a problem you didn't know you had in a way you don't understand.
  • Why did the auditor cross the road? Because he looked in the file, and that's what they did last year.

Indulging in a little accounting humor can help you raise morale and reduce stress at the office. It can also help you connect with colleagues and keep your career interesting. A few well-placed (and safe for work or SFW) jokes can even be beneficial to your career. According to an Accountemps survey, 79 percent of CFOs said a good sense of humor is important to fitting into a company’s unique corporate culture.
